Case Study: Milton Keynes University Hospital

Bringing Daylight to Modern Healthcare and Education

Large circular rooflight on roof above office

The Academic Centre at Milton Keynes University Hospital was designed to provide students and health professionals with a bright, modern learning environment. To support this vision, LAMILUX U.K Ltd installed three Glass Skylight FE Circular Rooflights, ensuring the interior is enriched with generous levels of natural daylight.

Design & Specifications

Each skylight was engineered to a roof opening size of 2500mm in diameter, providing a striking light size of 2200mm. With an 80% light transmission value, the skylights flood the interior spaces with natural daylight, enriching the centre’s atmosphere and reducing reliance on artificial lighting. The skylights were supplied pre-assembled to a 300mm high GRP upstand, which is thermally insulated for superior energy performance and designed with a U-value of < 0.9 W/m²K, meeting stringent energy-efficiency standards.

This pre-fabricated solution ensured a streamlined installation process, avoiding the complexity and expense of constructing bespoke upstands on site – a challenge particularly notable when working with circular rooflight designs.

Benefits to the Client

The circular skylights create a striking architectural focal point, enhancing the Academic Centre’s modern design while adding visual interest to the roofscape. Beyond aesthetics, their high daylight transmission enriches the interior environment, contributing to the wellbeing of occupants and supporting both concentration and comfort for students and healthcare professionals.

Installation was made significantly more efficient by delivering the skylights pre-assembled, eliminating the need for complex and costly on-site preparation. This streamlined process not only reduced installation time but also minimised disruption during construction. In addition, the skylights’ excellent thermal insulation performance aligns with the hospital’s sustainability goals, helping to minimise heat loss and optimise energy efficiency throughout the building.
