Case Study: Residential Property, Bath
Enhancing Daylight and Comfort in a Family Home

Set in the picturesque city of Bath, this residential development is a prime example of sustainable architecture combined with refined design. Commissioned by a family with a clear vision for a functional yet beautifully lit home, the project was brought to life by Hetreed Ross Architects in collaboration with Greenheart. Together, they created a high-performance, airtight timber frame property that places daylight, ventilation, and everyday comfort at the centre of its design philosophy.
The client’s brief called for strong visual and spatial connections to the outdoors, with generous amounts of natural light and an emphasis on energy-efficient building performance. To fulfil this vision, LAMILUX was selected to supply advanced daylighting solutions, chosen for their quality, performance, and seamless integration with the modern timber construction.
As part of the project, LAMILUX provided two triple glazed, high-performing rooflights, each designed to meet the specific functional and aesthetic needs of key areas within the home. The use of triple glazing offers several key advantages, particularly in a high-performance, airtight timber frame property like this one, enhancing thermal insulation, reducing heat loss and helping to maintain a stable indoor temperature all year round. This contributes to greater energy efficiency and supports the overall sustainability goals of the building.
Kitchen and Dining Area
In the heart of the home, above the kitchen and dining table, a LAMILUX Glass Skylight FE was installed with a 3° pitch aligned to the short side of the opening. Measuring 1000mm by 2000mm, this large rooflight offers a frameless internal appearance, allowing uninterrupted views of the sky and flooding the kitchen with natural light.
For ventilation, the unit features a discreet 230V tandem chain drive motor integrated into the upstand, with all wiring hidden to preserve a clean architectural finish. Additionally, an external blind was installed for solar control. The blind, operated via a built-in 230V motor and standard switch, is housed within a sleek aluminium frame and cover cassette finished in RAL 5204 anthracite-metallic. The grey sunvas 31018 fabric provides UPF50+ UV protection, balancing solar shading with aesthetic appeal. This combination of daylight and ventilation technology ensures the kitchen and dining space remains bright, comfortable, and energy-efficient throughout the year.
Entrance Hall Rooflight
A second rooflight was positioned above the entrance hall, creating an inviting and open atmosphere as visitors enter the home. This fixed, non-opening unit measures 900mm by 1200mm and features a subtle 3° pitch slope aligned with the long side of the opening. Its installation brings daylight into the hallway while maintaining the home’s airtight envelope and thermal integrity.
The integration of LAMILUX rooflights contributed significantly to the overall success of the project. Visually, both units were meticulously colour-matched and detailed to harmonise with the building’s modern aesthetic, offering sleek lines and a high-quality finish. Functionally, the motorised skylight in the kitchen provides a dual benefit of daylight and natural ventilation, enhanced further by responsive shading controls. The fixed entrance hall unit complements the home’s spatial flow, drawing natural light deep into the interior and creating a sense of openness. The project maintained a high level of energy efficiency, supported by LAMILUX’s precision-engineered upstands and airtight installation methods. The result is a home that not only looks and feels exceptional but also performs to the highest sustainability standards.
This bespoke family home stands as a compelling demonstration of how smart daylighting and integrated shading can elevate everyday living. The thoughtful collaboration between architect, contractor, and supplier enabled a home environment that is bright, healthy, and deeply responsive to the needs of its occupants. LAMILUX is proud to have contributed to a project where form meets function in such a harmonious and impactful way.
